Summer Door for Petronius the Arbiter
"Summer Door: for Petronius the Arbiter"
Gouache on Paper 30" x 18" 1984
Robert Heinlein is one of my favorite sci-fi writers - this painting was inspired by a story called "Door into Summer," which was about a cat named "Petronius the Arbiter", who lived in a very large house with many doors. In the long winter there he would go from one door to another, looking for the door that opened on summer. I borrowed from my Caswell Series for the setting, looking out a back door for a view of summer, complete with the Cape Fear River and Bald Head Island in the background! I think Petronius (also known as "Pete") would enjoy it!
This painting was accepted into the 21st Annual Painting and Sculpture Exhibit, sponsored by Associated Artists of Winston Salem, and received a Purchase Award.
