"Summer '81: No Dogs Allowed on Strand"

Imagine my shock when my beach-loving Scottish Terrier and I arrived for our week of walking, swimming, and crab-digging on the sand, and saw signs posted everywhere proclaiming "No Dogs Allowed on Strand"!!! I went to City Hall after we settled into the house to find out WHY they were ruining our vacation and was told too many people didn't clean up after their dogs and other people were complaining about it. Broke my heart - we wound up walking in the dunes where there were sandspurs and wicked ants, or sitting on the porch looking through the "bars" longing to hit the beach, and my Hobbit had to dig her holes around the cottage. Not fun! That was the last time we went to the beach in the summer - the rule was only in effect for June, July, and August, so we went in May or October from that point, which was really better since it was cooler and much less populated then!
